About the Wates Group

Boosting skills

As an industry we are facing many challenges – the introduction of new legislation, proposals for a step change in the supply of housing, and tough new regulations on sustainable building. And the construction industry needs another 85,000 skilled people every year to keep pace with the next decade’s demands.

Our community investment programme concentrates on skills development and training in communities of most need. Our aim is to boost skills and employment, helping individuals achieve economic independence and adding to the national pool of skilled construction workers.

Our pioneering Building Futures programme underpins our core values of respect for people and communities. The scheme focuses on those facing barriers into employment such as lone parents, ex-offenders and the long-term unemployed. Through a combination of guidance and mentoring Building Futures aims to equip individuals with the skills and confidence they need to get back into permanent work. Our target is to improve the skills and employability of 500 people by 2012.
