The Joint Contracts Tribunal, or JCT, produces a range of standard contracts.

A contract is an agreement. It sets out exactly what the contractor will build and how much they will be paid at each stage. It makes sure that designs and materials will meet legal standards. The contract also sets out how any defects should be made good.

After the handover and warranty period, the new owners must be able to look after the new building – and the people inside.

The contractor gives the new owner of a building a series of documents. These include:
