3.1 Site management
Subcontractors
"The Wates Group subcontracts many tasks to smaller companies. This is because every project is different, so needs a different mix of skills. I draw up Scopes of Works. These describe the work that each subcontractor will do. I measure their work as it takes place and arrange payment for each subcontractor as they complete each stage to specification.
It’s great to see a project from start to finish and know that you’ve helped to create a new development."
Chris Todd, Wates Trainee
As a group, consider the types of subcontractor that Wates might use.
Open a list of tasks that Wates often subcontracts.
Use the internet to find an example of a few types of company.
You are the site manager for a large development. You will be working with seven subcontractors for:
- groundwork and foundations
- drains
- steel structure
- bricklaying
- roofing
- mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations (MEP)
- interiors
Working with a group of friends, each choose a subcontractor:
- Create a team chart to show how you will manage your company’s team.
- You will need your own site manager as well as a trade manager and your site workers.
Now combine your charts into a single ‘master chart’. This should show how your subcontracting companies will each report to the main site manager.
CAREER FOCUS
I like being able to move around from one job to the next, being in different places all the time. I also enjoy working with people.
