The planning process

Every new development must follow a planning process. This starts with a planning application, which sets out the building work that the developer wants to carry out.

A new member has joined your design team. Help them get off to a good start – brief them on the main elements of the planning process:

  • Go to www.planningportal.gov.uk and click on ‘general public’.
  • Use the information on the site to explore:
    • the planning system.
    • how to make a planning application and the process involved.
    • make notes on the most important facts.

In a small group, create and give a brief talk. Include the three topics above.

  • Use slides to present your information
  • Create a chart or diagram on one slide to explain the planning process. There is a version on the planning portal site to guide you.
